How do we somersault?

Exploring a theory and Co-constructing knowledge.

Early this morning Bianca began to roll about on the carpet.

What are you doing? Teacher

I’m flipping around. Bianca answers as she places her head between her legs.

Natalie notices Bianca rolling and comes over to join in. Soon the two friends begin experimenting with an array of different methods to accomplish a perfect somersault.
Olivia observed them for 10 minutes. Although she was uncertain of the method, she attempts a somersault.

Bianca and Natalie notice that she is not able to flip over and they offer her some instructions.

You have to push and lift, push and lift, push and lift, instructs Bianca.

Unable to complete the flip with verbal assistance, Olivia asks for a demonstration from the girls. They oblige. Taylor, who is watching from the other side of the room dashes over and adds her own demonstration with a pose on how to finish the somersault.

This experience went on for almost an hour. One’s child’s interest engaged three other children. Observing, watching and listening to the children reveals how they build theories, work together to test their theories and then redesign them when necessary to solve a problem.
